Types of Therapy We Provide
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a widely used, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. It aims to help individuals manage their problems by altering the way they think and behave, which can lead to significant improvements in their emotional well-being.
CBT is structured and goal-oriented, typically involving a set number of sessions. It is a collaborative process where the therapist and client work together to identify specific problems, develop strategies to address them, and practice these strategies in daily life.
CBT is effective for a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, and other mental health conditions. By learning to challenge and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, clients can develop healthier coping mechanisms and achieve a better quality of life.
Schema Therapy
Schema Therapy is an integrative form of psychotherapy that combines elements of cognitive-behavioral, experiential, interpersonal, and psychoanalytic therapies. It focuses on identifying and changing deeply ingrained patterns or "schemas" that develop early in life and influence an individual's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
These schemas are often formed as a result of unmet emotional needs during childhood and can lead to persistent negative life patterns. Schema Therapy aims to help individuals recognize these schemas, understand their origins, and develop healthier ways of thinking and behaving.
The therapy is collaborative, with the therapist and client working together to explore and address these deep-rooted patterns. Techniques used in Schema Therapy include cognitive restructuring, experiential exercises, and behavioral interventions.
Schema Therapy is particularly effective for individuals with chronic psychological issues, and those who have not responded well to other forms of therapy. By addressing the core patterns driving emotional distress, clients can achieve long-lasting change and improved emotional well-being.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach primarily used to help individuals recover from trauma and distressing life experiences. EMDR therapy facilitates the processing of traumatic memories by using bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, to help the brain integrate and reprocess these memories.
During an EMDR session, the therapist guides the client through recalling distressing events while simultaneously directing their eye movements. This process helps reduce the emotional charge associated with the memory, leading to decreased symptoms of trauma and distress.
EMDR is particularly effective for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it can also be beneficial for other mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and phobias. The therapy typically involves eight phases, including history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation.
By enabling clients to process traumatic memories in a safe and structured way, EMDR can lead to significant improvements in emotional well-being and overall mental health.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique form of psychotherapy that encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty about them. ACT helps clients to commit to actions that align with their values and lead to a richer, more meaningful life.
ACT operates on six core principles: cognitive defusion, acceptance, contact with the present moment, observing the self, values, and committed action. These principles work together to help individuals develop psychological flexibility, allowing them to engage fully with the present moment and pursue their values despite potential challenges.
The therapy involves a combination of mindfulness practices, acceptance strategies, and behavioral interventions. Instead of attempting to eliminate difficult feelings, ACT teaches clients to be present with what life brings and move toward value-driven behavior.
ACT is effective for a wide range of psychological issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, and chronic pain. By fostering acceptance and commitment to personal values, ACT supports clients in building a life that is more aligned with their true selves and aspirations.
TYPES OF REFERRALS
A referral is not required to see a Psychologist.
However, there are many referral options available which may provide rebates and assist with the cost of sessions.
Medicare Mental Health Care Plans
The most common form of referral to our practice is the Mental Health Care Plan. This plan is completed by your GP and allows you to an initial 6 individual sessions and 10 group sessions of Psychological treatment with Medicare rebates. Upon completion of the initial 6 individual sessions, and following a successful Review with your GP, you could receive another 4 sessions of individual psychological treatment (i.e. total of 10 sessions per calendar year).
Your GP will determine your eligibility for this plan. Should you wish to discuss this with your GP, please ensure that you book a long consultation.
Although a Medicare rebate can be claimed, there is generally a gap fee involved.
Private Health Insurance Rebates
A referral is not usually required when utilising private health care cover for clinical psychology services, however eligibility for services needs to be ascertained with each insurer.
Rebates cannot be claimed from Medicare and private health care cover concurrently. Private health care cover can be utilised in the event that therapy extends for more than the 10 allocated Medicare sessions.
