HOW WE WORK

Evidence-based therapies

We select therapeutic approaches based on each person’s presentation, goals and preferences.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy CBT

CBT helps you notice connections between what you think, how you feel and what you do. Together, you and your psychologist test practical ways to respond differently to situations that are keeping a problem going.

For example: someone who feels anxious in social situations might learn to question harsh predictions about being judged and gradually practise situations they have been avoiding.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy explores emotional patterns that have developed over many years, often linked to earlier experiences. It helps people understand why the same difficulties keep appearing in relationships or in how they see themselves, and develop healthier ways of meeting their needs.

For example: someone who often feels they are not good enough might learn to recognise that familiar belief and respond to themselves with more balance and compassion.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing EMDR

EMDR is a structured therapy used particularly for distressing or traumatic memories. After careful assessment and preparation, your psychologist helps you work through a memory while using alternating attention, such as guided side-to-side eye movements. The aim is for the memory to become less upsetting and disruptive.

For example: someone who remains distressed after a car accident may gradually find that reminders of the accident no longer trigger the same level of fear.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ACT

ACT helps people make room for difficult thoughts and feelings without letting them dictate every decision. It focuses on what matters most to you and building small, realistic actions in that direction, even when life is challenging.

For example: someone living with persistent pain might learn ways to respond to worry and discomfort while gradually reconnecting with meaningful activities.

YOUR TREATMENT JOURNEY

What to expect from psychological treatment

We aim to make the process collaborative, understandable and practical. Your treatment will be tailored to your circumstances.

01

Initial assessment

We take time to understand your concerns, relevant history, current circumstances, strengths and what you would like to change. You can ask questions about confidentiality and the process.

02

Shared treatment plan

Together we develop a working understanding of the difficulties and agree on realistic goals. We explain the treatment options and why an approach may be helpful.

03

Active treatment

Sessions may involve talking through experiences, learning skills, trying strategies between appointments and gradually practising changes that matter in everyday life.

04

Reviewing progress

We check what is improving, what remains difficult and whether the plan needs adjusting. The number and frequency of sessions depend on your needs and circumstances.

For workers’ compensation clients, we also discuss how psychological treatment may fit alongside medical care and rehabilitation, including appropriate communication with referrers and other providers.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

Frequently asked questions

If you are unsure which pathway applies, our reception team can help with general booking and referral questions.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is needed to book a private appointment. A suitable referral is generally required to claim Medicare rebates, and insurer-funded treatment may require approval.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?

Eligible clients with a relevant GP Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral may claim Medicare rebates for eligible sessions. Please discuss your eligibility with your GP and reception.

What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a registered psychologist?

Both are registered psychologists regulated by the Psychology Board of Australia. A clinical psychologist has completed an approved clinical psychology training and endorsement pathway. Medicare rebates may differ according to the practitioner and service.

How long is a consultation?

Standard individual appointments are generally around 50 minutes. Please confirm the length of your appointment when booking.

Is telehealth available?

Telehealth may be available depending on the psychologist, your circumstances and the funding arrangement. Reception can advise on current options.

Can I attend under workers’ compensation?

We see workers’ compensation clients, particularly at Karrinyup. Referral, insurer approval and payment arrangements should be confirmed before your first appointment.

Can I choose a psychologist?

You can request a particular psychologist. Availability and suitability will depend on their current appointments and areas of practice.

What if I need to cancel?

We require notice by 12 noon two business days before an appointment to avoid a cancellation fee. Please review our fees and cancellation information or contact reception.
